Evidence of your knowledge of English
When you apply for registration with a licence to practise – or your first licence if you’ve held registration before – we need to be satisfied you have the necessary knowledge of English to practise safely in the UK.
We need to be confident you can communicate effectively in English, so you do not put the safety of your patients at risk.
Communicating includes speaking, reading, writing and listening.
This guide provides information on the different ways you can demonstrate your knowledge of English if you are:
- applying for the PLAB test
- an international medical graduate applying for registration with a licence to practise
- a European doctor applying for registration with a licence to practise
- applying for your first licence if you have ever held registration or currently hold registration only.
Each chapter of this guide gives details of a different type of evidence of your knowledge of English. Select the one that's relevant to you.
